Public Sector

What do they do?

The public sector comprises government organisations and institutions responsible for providing public services and administering policies to serve the citizens. It encompasses various levels of government, including local, regional, and national entities, as well as public agencies, departments, and organisations. The key functions of the public sector include education, healthcare, law enforcement, infrastructure development, social services, and regulatory activities.

Where does sustainability come into place?

  • In the public sector, sustainability roles are crucial for implementing policies, regulations, and initiatives that promote environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Professionals working in sustainability roles within the public sector often contribute to the development and enforcement of sustainability-related policies and practices. Roles can be found in regulatory bodies, research institutes, local authorities, think tanks, charities, NGOs and international organisations.

  • Professionals in regulatory bodies oversee and enforce environmental regulations. They conduct inspections, issue permits, and ensure that businesses and organisations comply with laws related to pollution control, waste management, and conservation. Individuals in research institutes and think tanks conduct studies and research on sustainability issues. They analyse data, trends, and best practices to inform policy development and decision-making. Other roles focus on developing and implementing strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate change. This may involve developing climate action plans, promoting renewable energy, and assessing the impact of climate-related risks.
